Artifact 1 TPE 1: Vocabulary Cards and PowerPoint Activity
One of the most crucial aspects to student comprehension is learning content specific vocabulary. This helps support all learning with diverse backgrounds develop a common language to participate in collaborative activities and class discussion. Middle school science vocabulary becomes complex in order to familiarize students with scientific language before moving on to increasingly complex concepts in high school. TPE 1 states that a teacher needs to ensure that strategies are used in the classroom that make content material understandable to all students (CTC, 2013). According to Haley, student who struggle with mastery of the language benefit from the use of visuals and illustrations along with content specific vocabulary (Haley & Austin, 2014). Vocabulary is introduced through a PowerPoint presentation and students are given cards to sort and match. The terms, definitions, and pictures are separate on the student card copies and they match term to definition and picture as best they can before I play the PointPoint.
